Ignoring Your BMR for Years? Here's What Actually Changes

est to keep basic functions running, such as breathing, circulation and maintaining body temperature. It is a baseline—not the number of calories you should automatically eat each day.

BMR Calculator

How do you calculate BMR?

For most adults, a common way to calculate BMR is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. It uses your age, height, weight and sex.

Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161

So, an Indian user does not need a completely different “India BMR formula” simply because they live in India. The calculation still starts with the same basic measurements; the useful part is entering accurate numbers and understanding what the result represents.

BMR vs. daily calorie needs

This is where many BMR calculators become confusing.

Your BMR describes energy use at rest. Walking, workouts, work, daily movement and digestion require additional energy. To estimate your total daily expenditure (TDEE), BMR is combined with an activity estimate.

So don't treat your BMR as a calorie limit or a guaranteed maintenance target.

How accurate is a BMR calculator?

It's an estimate, not a laboratory measurement. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation performed well among commonly used prediction equations in a systematic review, but individual errors still occur.

Practical next step: calculate your BMR, then use it as the starting point for estimating your daily calorie needs—not the final answer.
